5 Best resorts in Cherrapunji (Sohra): A guide for all budgets

Rachel HannahOctober 14, 2023

Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra to the native Khasi people, is a small town in Meghalaya with a population of around 15,000 people. This remote place has been made famous across India for its abundance of waterfalls, living root bridges, caves, and beautiful lush rainforest setting.

In the monsoon season, the dense rainforests of Cherrapunji have an average rainfall of 450 inches (11,430 mm) making it one of the rainiest places on earth.

We stayed in Cherrapunji after hiking the Double Decker Living Root Bridge before driving back to Shillong and I’m so glad we did because we had more time to enjoy being in nature.

No matter the reason for your visit I highly recommend staying in one of the beautiful resorts in Cherrapunji because many of them offer incredible views overlooking the canyon and the 7 Sisters Waterfall.

If you’re feeling unsure of where to stay in Cherrapunji this guide breaks down all of the best resorts including my personal favorite stay at the iconic Polo Orchard Resort!

I preface by saying that the options for luxury resorts in Cherrapunji are extremely limited as most of the accommodations are simple homestays but in my opinion, while not perfect, the 5 resorts I mention below are the best that the area has to offer.

Anyways, without delaying any longer, let’s get started on the best resorts in Cherrapunji.

Polo Orchid Resort Cherrapunji

I have to start this list out with what is easily the most beautiful and well-known resort in Cherrapunji! The Polo Orchid Resort is a premium clifftop estate that offers the most incredible views from all around the property.

This is where we stayed in Cherrapunji and I was utterly impressed – it was more than a hotel it was an experience as the resort has a few on-site restaurants, a stunning infinity pool, and a spa! My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time to stay longer.

From the moment we checked in we were treated like royalty and the staff took our bags straight to our room. Speaking of rooms, there are many different options including basic rooms, cottages, suits, lodges with their own private plunge pools, and entire villas.

Daryl and I stayed in the Log Hut with a Plunge Pool and it was dreamy! I would highly recommend it! These wooden huts are built from Canadian Spruce Wood which made them feel super cozy on the interior. We also made use of the attached balcony that faces directly toward the canyon and waterfall.

Our 4-poster bed was super plush and had a heating pad underneath the mattress which was nice for the chilly evenings.

Unfortunately, we were visiting during the winter months so it was too cold to enjoy the plunge pool but this would be awesome to have if you are staying in Cherrapunji in the warmer months.

However, we did make sure to treat ourselves to the room service because we didn’t feel like moving after hiking all day.

In the morning I was delighted by the wide selections at the breakfast buffet (included in your room rate) and I was even able to enjoy Banana French Toast which was a comfortable reminder of home.

For dinner, you can dine at the cliffside Sohra House either in the main dining room or out in the courtyard.  Sohra House offers various types of cuisine on its menu so good luck deciding.

If you want to unwind with some drinks, a bonfire, and live music venture over to the Sky Grill, an open-air diner that serves up craft cocktails, finger foods, and hookah.

Even though the Polo Orchard Resort is technically only a 3-star resort, the views, service, rooms, and amenities, definitely make it feel more like a 5-star resort in Cherrapunji.

The nightly rate at Polo Orchard Resort is pricey with the nightly rate typically ranging between 23024 to 36706 INR ($276 to $440+ USD) but it will greatly depend on the type of room you choose and the time of year you are visiting. This is the #1 resort in Cherrapunji so if you have the budget for it I wouldn’t hesitate about staying here!

You can check availability and book the Polo Orchard Resort on Booking.com.

If the Polo Orchard Resort is a bit out of your price range have a look at the budget-friendly 7 Sister Falls View Inn instead! It also offers an incredible view as its location is just in front of the 7 Sisters Falls, hence the name of the hotel. The popular market is only 5 km down the road.

While it is not technically a resort I definitely think it qualifies to be on this list because of the spacious and clean rooms, polite staff, restaurant, scenic terraces, and serene property.

All of the rooms include a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with free toiletries. If you upgrade, you can get a room that has a bathtub. This a nice place to stay if you are coming with children because some of the rooms can hold up to 5 people.

The best part is that a budget double room begins at just 3003 INR ($36 USD) which is an extremely great value for money!

A continental, Italian, or Chinese breakfast is included in the cost of your room and is served each morning in the dining room that has views of the canyon.

Labana Hotel & Restaurants

The 3-star Labana Hotel is one of the most scenic resorts in Cherrapunji because it sits right on the edge of a canyon. It is also affordable and in a very convenient area being walkable to the Sohra Market and only around 4 km away from Nohkalikai Falls.

You know how looks can be deceiving? Well at first glance Labana Hotel doesn’t seem like much from the outside but there is more to the story once you enter inside!

Some of the rooms have a balcony and stepping out your eyes with be treated to exceptional views of the valley and the 7 Sisters Falls. In my opinion, this is one of the main reasons to stay here so it’s worth spending a little more and upgrading while booking.

The rooms themselves are comfortable, clean, and spacious with thick comforters and a space heater to keep the chill from ruining your sleep. The bathrooms are also spotless and have a Jaguar geyser that warms up in just 20 minutes. There is also fast WiFi and you can make tea or coffee with the electric kettle. Expect to spend around 4755 INR ($57 USD) for a room without a view or 5840 INR ($70 USD) for the mountain view.

One of the main cons with this property is the inconsistencies with the power outages so you may need to contact the staff to help you if it doesn’t restore itself soon after.

Breakfast is not included but in the dining area, you can order a la carte. For lunch and dinner, you can pick from a variety of chicken, fish, and vegetarian dishes. Don’t want to be bothered to leave your room? Then take advantage of the prompt room service!

Note: This resort does not have lifts.

San Nael la Resort

The San Nael la Resort makes the list of best resorts in Cherrapunji for its peaceful secluded property 2 km off the main road, decent mountain views, and top-notch staff.

This newer 3-star resort is nothing fancy but it is the kind of place you will want to retreat back to after a long day of adventuring in Cherrapunji. Imagine having tea on an antique chair and looking out at the hills. There is even an outside playground to occupy the children.

The restaurant is another highlight at San Nael la Resort. The cooks prepare delicious authentic dishes and the Pork Dry Fry is highly rated. But note that previous guests mentioned the breakfast portions being on the smaller side.

The cleanliness here is a priority so the rooms are well kept. Each room has free WiFi, a kettle, and a TV with HD channels and Netflix. Expect to spend around 5840 INR ($70 USD) per night and you can spend a little bit more if you want a room with a mountain view.

For the low price, it is definitely one of the best resorts in Cherrapunji!

You can check availability and book the San Nael la Resort on Booking.com.

Sulawado Resort

The Sulawado Resort is likely the least like a true resort but it is still a nice place to stay in Cherrapunji especially if you are a nature lover on a budget.

The location is excellent and there is a stream flowing directly behind the resort which is a nice bonus! Because there is minimal light pollution you can head up to the rooftop at night and spend some time in solitude stargazing. If you listen closely you’ll even be able to hear the water and sounds from the jungle.

During the daytime, you can take in beautiful views of the rolling hills.

Their serving portions for breakfast are satisfactory but very limited in options. Expect to be served things like an omelet with toasted bread or Maggie. If you want to order more it will cost extra.

The rooms are basic but are clean and have everything you need including a wardrobe, desk, WiFi, and a TV. You’ll end up paying around 4004 INR ($48 USD) for a standard room or 6006 INR ($72 USD) for a family room that sleeps 5 people.

Because this place is such an incredible deal it books up extremely fast during peak tourist season so make sure to secure your stay as soon as possible!

You can check availability and book the Sulawado Resort on Booking.com.
